Boot and mount your Windows Hard Drive in Ubuntu (13.04, and/or other versions)

DVD in, boot!

Click “Try Ubuntu”

“Ctrl-Alt-t”

sudo mkdir /mnt/hd

sudo mount -o ro /dev/sda2 /mnt/hd                         [assumed the first partition is holding your Dell or Asus stuff]

cd /mnt/hd

ls

now you can plug in your thumb or portable USB drive and copy your files from /mnt/hd/Users/xxx to it.
